Dubai, capital city of the eponymous Emirate on the Arabian Gulf, used to be best known for its pearl trade. The discovery of oil and natural gas in 1966 changed everything and later prompted the Al Maktoum dynasty's desire to establish an oil-independent economy; today only 6% of Dubai's GDP comes from oil and gas and the town has flourished into a glittering metropolis of superlatives, home to the world's most ambitious architectural, industrial and touristic projects. Dubai's booming economy, luxurious resorts, unusual residential developments, palatial hotels, stunning skyline, opulent displays of wealth and luxury, and some of the biggest, tallest, most daring, most expensive, and indeed most surprising projects to be found anywhere, have not caused UAE nationals - known as "Emiratis" (today only 17% of the population) ­ to compromise their oriental heritage, values or traditions.
